Which type of fixed awning is right for me?

There are no hard and fast rules for choosing a fixed awning, and there are seemingly as many awning styles as there are homes to feature them. There are, however, a few general ways of categorizing awnings, and careful consideration is necessary to pick the best choice for your home.

  • Flush mounted – mounted directly to the wall without additional support or brackets.
  • Bracket mounted – mounted with a portion of the awning on a wall and supported by brackets. Iron is a popular architectural choice especially for copper awnings.
  • Hanging awnings – these awnings usually extend from the side of a home or building and would commonly be found on patios and porches.

Custom fixed awnings

Because homes come in so many shapes and sizes. For this reason it may make sense to have a custom fixed awning design and built. You can do this with the help of an architect or builder – or you may be able to work directly with a sheet metal manufacturer to custom build an awning to your exact specifications.

Awning materials

Awning material is an important consideration, and there are many types and designs from which to choose. Visually, your awning should complement the aesthetic of your home. It should ideally last for years, so its appearance is something with which you should remain pleased.

While fabric is a popular choice for retractable awnings, they are not ideally suited as permanent awnings. The fabric may fade, tear or deteriorate over time and will eventually need to be replaced.

Instead, metal tends to make the best type of fixed awning. They provide a great deal more support than do fabric awnings and are excellent choices in more extreme climates where wind, snow, rain and humidity might take a toll on lesser materials.

Metals commonly used in awning construction include aluminum or copper. Not only is metal great for achieving a sleek, ultra-modern look, but some metals such as copper can be used to achieve an antique, sophisticated appearance that is sure to make your home’s exterior a memorable and conversation-worthy feature.
